KITCHEN & MAINFLOOR RENOVATION · ST. ALBERT
Every Finish in Its Place. Every Room Finally Settled.
When every finish works together, a renovation changes more than the materials. It changes how a home feels.
OAKMONT, ST.ALBERT, ALBERTA
These clients had previous renovation experience in Vancouver, BC. It had shown them what a home could feel like when every decision was made on purpose. When they bought in Oakmont, they brought that same vision with them.
The main floor of this St. Albert home had good bones, but the layout wasn’t aligned with what they had in mind. The kitchen island was angled in a way that interrupted flow, and the cabinetry wasn’t functional and conducive to the way they wanted to use their kitchen. The front living room felt smaller than it was, crowded by a fireplace and built-in shelving that restricted the space.
The goal was thoroughly rethinking how the main floor felt and functioned.

Full-Height Quartz Backsplash
APPROACH
Build the material palette around warmth and restraint, with quartz as a continuous surface element rather than a decorative accent.
CHALLENGE
Standard tile backsplashes break the visual line of the kitchen and limit the sense of material intentionality.
SOLUTION
Hanstone Tahitian Cream quartz runs from the countertop up the wall as a full-height backsplash through to the upper cabinets and hood area, with a quartz shelf detail above the cooktop carrying the material one level further.
RESULT
A kitchen surface that reads as a single, cohesive finish — elevated without being busy.
A Palette Built Around Warmth and Restraint
The kitchen drove the scope of everything else. The angled island came out. A smoother, more functional layout replaced it, with appliance locations, customized cabinet configurations, lighting, and flooring all planned together from the beginning. The material palette was built around warmth and restraint. Rift cut oak brings texture and grain without heaviness. Soft painted perimeter cabinets frame the space without competing with the wood. Matte black hardware grounds it. The countertops are Hanstone Tahitian Cream quartz, and rather than stopping at the counter edge, the quartz continues up the wall as a full-height backsplash through to the upper cabinets and hood area. A quartz shelf detail above the cooktop carries the material through one more level. The appliances are built in throughout, each with its place, keeping the kitchen organized and uncluttered.
The spaces around the kitchen had to move in the same direction. The dining area received a custom coffee bar with floating shelves and integrated lighting, adding daily utility and a sense of intention. New hardwood flooring runs through the kitchen, dining area, living room, office, mudroom, and powder room, tying the spaces together without forcing them to feel identical. Lighting was selected and placed as part of the overall scheme rather than room by room. Island pendants, dining fixtures, stair chandeliers, recessed lighting, and cabinet lighting all work together. Warm light makes finished materials look better. It also makes a room feel more settled at the end of a long day.
Better Flow. Better Proportion. A Main Floor That Holds Together.
The front living room was opened by removing the fireplace and built-ins that had been closing it down. The space did not need more square footage. It needed less clutter in the way. The main floor now has better flow, better proportion, and a finish level that holds together from one space to the next. When every element works together, the effect is calm and settled.
