BASEMENT RENOVATION · EDMONTON
Built For The
Life Below The Surface
Thoughtful design and disciplined craft turned a dark, underused basement into
a polished extension of a Lake Summerside home.
LAKE SUMMERSIDE · SOUTH EDMONTON, AB
Returning clients came to NUVO with a clear vision: a lower level that matched the refinement of their main floor. Their previous ensuite renovation with us had built trust. This project needed to reach higher—warm, polished, cohesive, and built to last.
As busy medical professionals, they needed a partner who could translate a defined aesthetic into disciplined execution. Every detail mattered, and every decision had to respect both design and time.
A Space In Waiting
Before construction, the basement was typical: dim, underutilized, and disconnected from life upstairs. The clients saw potential—three spaces working as one: a wet bar and pool table zone, a bathroom equal to those above, and a wine room to anchor it all.
Mechanical constraints meant nothing could move, so every square foot had to work harder.
Designing a basement that feels effortless takes discipline. Each zone must stand on its own yet connect seamlessly with the next.
The Inside Curve: A Wine Room That Earns Its Place
Some of the best design ideas come from clients themselves and this was one of them. Rather than treat the interior curve of the staircase as wasted space, the clients imagined it as a wine room. The idea elevated the entire basement plan.
The curved geometry that once posed a challenge became a defining feature. The result is a space with presence—intimate, functional, and architecturally interesting. It now anchors the entertainment zone and makes a lasting impression.
ORIGIN
Client-led concept using an architectural constraint as a feature
LOCATION
Interior curve of the main stairwell
FUNCTION
Wine storage integrated into the entertainment zone
CHARACTER
Intimate, architectural, and distinctly memorable
Where Constraint Becomes Clarity
Mechanical equipment defined the layout boundaries. Careful planning turned those limitations into structure. The entertaining zone frames the core experience, with bathroom and mechanical spaces positioned for both function and flow. The wine room completes the picture without competing for attention.
These spatial decisions are invisible when the project is complete, but they define how naturally a space lives.
What was once dark and unused is now a warm, intentional extension of the home built for everyday living and effortless entertaining.
The clients were thrilled. Each zone performs as designed, and the lower level now carries the same intention as the rest of the home. This project reflects NUVO’s standard: disciplined craftsmanship and thoughtful execution in every part of the house.
For those who expect more from their homes, this is the difference between a basement that was finished and one that was truly designed.
